Candylab

Candylab make wooden toy cars with the styling of real vehicles — racers, a New York taxi, a police car, and a run of food trucks selling donuts, hot dogs, tacos and ice cream.

They are built to be played with and displayed, which is why adults tend to end up collecting them alongside the children they were bought for.

Which one should I get?

They are all the same idea executed differently, so pick by what the child in question is actually interested in.

The food trucks are the ones that get played with longest, because they come with a story attached rather than just being a vehicle.

Why wooden rather than plastic

No batteries, no lights, no sounds — which means the play is driven by the child rather than by the toy. It also means there is nothing to break or run out, and a wooden car survives being handed down in a way a plastic one with electronics does not.

The trade-off is honest: they do not do anything on their own. A child who wants a toy that lights up will not be impressed on the first day.

Buying as a gift

A single car is a good small present, and the race set is the one to reach for when you want something with more presence. Because the range shares a look, they collect well — a second and third car later on feel like part of a set rather than a duplicate.

Stock on individual models moves, so if you have your eye on a specific one it is worth taking it when it is there.
