What is Savon de Marseille?
It is a traditional French soap made in the Marseille method — vegetable oils cooked in an open kettle, then cured hard. The result is a dense, low-lather bar with very little in it beyond soap.
The practical consequence is longevity. A Marseille bar is harder than a typical moulded bathroom soap, so it wears down slowly and does not turn to mush in a dish. That hardness is the whole point of the format.

Getting the most out of a bar
Keep it dry between uses. A hard-milled bar sitting in standing water will soften on the underside and lose the advantage it was made for — a draining dish is worth more here than with most soaps.
Because the bars are large, plenty of people cut one in half: one piece in use, one put away. It is easier to handle and the spare stays hard.
Not just for the bathroom
