Six soaps with centuries of history, still made today.
Aleppo and Nabulsi, pressed from olive oil in the Levant. African black soap, cooked with ash from cocoa pods and plantain skins. Castile, named for the Spanish kingdom whose olive groves supplied it. Savon de Marseille, made to a standard set by royal edict in 1688. And tallow soap, of the kind Pliny the Elder described nearly two thousand years ago.
